Description and characteristic

There are several varieties of German Spitz that are distinguished by their size. Examples include the large wolf spitz or the dwarf spitz, the smallest. The German Spitz is recognizable by its silky fur with long, straight hairs, as well as by its abundant mane at the level of its neck and shoulders. Its legs are also covered with long hairs which form a sort of fringe, just like its tail, carried high, which is bushy.

The German Spitz has small dark eyes and a pointed muzzle that make it look like a fox. Its small pointed ears reinforce this resemblance.

His origin

The Spitz is the oldest breed in Central Europe. She is descended from the Stone Age peat bog and from the lakeside cities, and is the source of many other breeds on the continent. The ancestors of the Middle Spitz were mainly used as sheepdogs. Large and smaller individuals, including the Dwarf Spitz, only appeared around the 18th century. The German Spitz was definitively recognized by the FCI on January 1, 1957. Its official FCI standard in force was published in January 2013.

His character and behavior

The German Spitz is a very alert, lively and gentle dog that does everything to please its owners, to which it is very attached. He particularly appreciates the presence of children. It is a playful dog which brings cheerfulness in the house.

On the other hand, he is wary of people outside his family. This is why he is a good alert dog without ever being aggressive. He accepts very well the presence of other animals in his family. It is also a dog that tolerates loneliness well.

Its needs

Even if the German Spitz is happier if it lives in the countryside, it adapts very well to urban life, especially to apartment life. In all cases, it is a dog that needs to exert itself on the occasion of long daily outings during which it can do physical exercise, and especially spend time with its masters.

The beautiful fur of the German Spitz requires careful maintenance. It is necessary to brush it against the hair several times a week, or even every day, to preserve the beauty of its hair. The German Spitz experiences two moults per year during which it loses a lot of hair.

His food

The German Spitz needs, like all dogs, a quality food and especially adapted to its age, its state of health and its physical exercise. It is a dog that tends to grow easily. So be careful to monitor the quantities of your rations.

The health of Spitz

The German Spitz has robust health. It is not afraid of the cold, especially thanks to its thick fur. This dog has no health problems peculiar to its breed.
